Reconsidering verses on women in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ô

The Centre of Islamic Studies is delighted to invite you to Reconsidering Verses on Women in the Qur’an: A Conversation with Karen Bauer and Feras Hamza. This event will be held at the Kamran Djam Lecture Theatre (DLT) in the SOAS Main Building on 10 April at 17:30 BST.

Dr Karen Bauer and Dr Feras Hamza have co-authored several publications, beginning with An Anthology of Qurʾanic Commentaries, Vol II: On Women. This anthology, following Volume I: On the Nature of the Divine, offers annotated translations of ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ôic commentaries spanning twelve centuries as well as interviews with contemporary Muslim scholars.ÌýÌý

The Anthology led them to re-examine the place of women in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ô itself, and in 2023 they published their monograph, Women, Households and the Hereafter in the Qurʾan: A Patronage of Piety, which comprises a comprehensive analysis of the female subject in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ô. This book offers a fresh perspective by undertaking the first historical-critical study of all the verses on women in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ô and by offering an initial overview of households and patronage in late antique social structures that took the place of formal state structures in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ô’s tribal milieu.Ìý
