The Centre of Islamic Studies is delighted to invite you to Reconsidering Verses on Women in the Qur’an: A Conversation with Karen Bauer and Feras Hamza. This event will be held at the Kamran Djam Lecture Theatre (DLT) in the SOAS Main Building on 10 April at 17:30 BST.
Dr Karen Bauer and Dr Feras Hamza have co-authored several publications, beginning with An Anthology of Qurʾanic Commentaries, Vol II: On Women. This anthology, following Volume I: On the Nature of the Divine, offers annotated translations of ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ôic commentaries spanning twelve centuries as well as interviews with contemporary Muslim scholars.ÌýÌý
The Anthology led them to re-examine the place of women in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²ÔMuslims believe that the Holy ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ô contains divine revelations to the Prophet Muhammed received in Mecca and Medina over a period of 23 years in the early 7th century CE. More itself, and in 2023 they published their monograph, Women, Households and the Hereafter in the Qurʾan: A Patronage of Piety, which comprises a comprehensive analysis of the female subject in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ô. This book offers a fresh perspective by undertaking the first historical-critical study of all the verses on women in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ô and by offering an initial overview of households and patronage in late antique social structures that took the place of formal state structures in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ô’s tribal milieu.Ìý

Dr Karen Bauer (PhD, Princeton) is an Associate Professor in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ôic Studies Unit at the IIS. Dr Bauer’s research centres on the Qur’an and its reception history, the history of emotions in Islam, and gender in Islamic history and thought. Dr Bauer’s publications include Women, Households, and the Hereafter in the ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ô: a Patronage of PietyÌý(2023, with Feras Hamza),Ìý An Anthology of ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ôic Commentaries, Vol II: On Women Ìý(2021, with Feras Hamza), (2015), (2013), and numerous articles.
Feras Hamza
Senior Research Fellow and Anthology Coordinator
Dr Feras Hamza (PhD, Oxford) is a Senior Research Fellow and Anthology Coordinator, and Head of the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Wollongong in Dubai, UAE. His publications include An Anthology of ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ôic Commentaries, Vol I: On The Nature of the Divine (2009, with Sajjad Rizvi), An Anthology of ²Ï³Ü°ù’a²Ôic Commentaries, Vol II: On Women (2021, with Karen Bauer) and numerous articles.
